Roberts Creek

This Friday, April 22, enjoy dinner (served from 5 to 9 p.m.) and live music with Jim Taylor from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Roberts Creek Legion. Following dinner, enjoy Ashley Webber (indie folk) from 9 p.m. onward.

Saturday, April 23 is Earth Dance at the Roberts Creek Legion. Rock with Ken McBride from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Members are $6, guests $12.

This weekend, celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 24. The day will start off with an open ceremony honouring our interconnectedness at Roberts Creek Hall at 10 a.m. led by Rev. Ray Neibergall.

The event at the mandala starts at noon and goes to 5 p.m. There will be a tribute to Daniel Kingsbury, founder of the Jellyfish Project, honouring his environmental and community work at 1:50 p.m.

There will be a transportation hub including Coast Car Co-op, Share-there, Bike to Work Week and TRaC. Bike tune-ups and valet services will be offered (donations welcome). The Royal Astronomical Society will have their solar telescope set up for the sunspot viewing. There will be amazing food from five local vendors. The event is zero waste; visitors are encouraged to bring their own travel mugs, containers and utensils.

The musical shuttle bus service will also be running this year to make sure you have easy access to Earth Day. The shuttle runs from Davis Bay to Sunnycrest Mall via Roberts Creek Store.  See you at Earth Day.

This year the Roberts Creek Library has twice as many free seed packets in the seed library as last year. The staff ask that you harvest the seeds in the fall so they can be added to the seed library every spring.

The library has many of the latest adult and children’s books. Just as soon as Annie Proulx’s much-anticipated Barkskins is in bookstores, the library will have it in stock. Also at the library is Elena Ferrante’s The Story of the Lost Child, both volumes of Karl Ove Knausgaard’s My Struggles, an exciting Donna Leon mystery and, of course, the latest Stephen King thriller. Reserving is always possible. To become a library member, just offer proof of address and contact information.

A busy weekend in the Creek. I will be happy to include your news/details in my next column; please email me the details to [email protected]. Enjoy the Creek this weekend!
