Gospel Rock holds Spring Affair

Gibsons

For the Love of Gospel Rock put on a family-friendly event last Sunday to sign up new supporters for the land purchase of the scenic landmark and to celebrate its history. Members of the Squamish Nation gave a blessing, musician Celso Machado performed on the African harp, Ken McBride sang a selection, and other participants showed their artwork or photography. Pictured are society president Sharon Danroth, Pat Ridgway, Loretta Macklam and Lowry Olafson singing together an original Olafson/Macklam song, Forever Lost.

They say hope springs eternal, and the non-profit society For the Love of Gospel Rock is hoping this year could see a big boost in their effort to buy the land for a park.

The group held a Spring Affair March 20 at Dougall Park in Gibsons.

“It was hugely successful,” said president Sharon Danroth, who said the group is starting to feel some momentum.

For the Love of Gospel Rock is trying to get people to commit to donating $100 to help purchase one square metre of the property. “They’re starting to sell,” Danroth said. “There were some sold at the event on Sunday.”

The main lot at Gospel Rock, Block 7, was recently on the market with an asking price of $6.25 million.

Danroth said seeing a figure like that doesn’t deter the group.

“I think that once we get enough community people having bought the square metres, and once we get the Town of Gibsons supporting us, and perhaps the regional district [and Squamish Nation], then I think we can go to the big guys and ask for money from foundations, and conservancies, and those sorts of things,” she noted.

For the Love of Gospel Rock organizers are going to meet next week and make plans for spring and summer events, including a float for the Sea Cavalcade.
