The Sunshine Coast Yacht Club held its Annual Gibsons Regatta once again on the weekend of July 22 and 23  with three races over the two days – a long race around Keats and the Pasley Islands on Saturday and two short Gibsons in-harbour races on Sunday. Fourteen boats from the Sunshine Coast and the greater Vancouver area turned out for a weekend of perfect weather. Overall and Division 1 winner was Michael Clements and crew (Ella Li, Adrienne Mennell, Luzzara Mazariegos), sailing his Martin 242, Too Wicked. Division 2 winner was Igancio Vulliez and crew (Randy James, Ian Plumbley) sailing his Tanzer 26, Aura.

The Gibsons Regatta was a regular event on the Sea Cavalcade weekend. After a hiatus of a number of years, the club revived it, having its first renewed regatta on Saturday, July 27, 2019. The historic Howe Sound Cup (which in past days was awarded to the overall winner of three local regattas: Bowen Island, Gibsons, and Squamish) was taken out of retirement and awarded to the Gibsons Regatta winner. First-timers and those who rarely race are very welcome.

Regular Sunday races are the core of the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club’s activity and a fixture in Gibsons Harbour. Racing year-round with a regular fleet of around 10 boats of all types and sizes. Our July regatta usually has a fleet of 15 to 20 boats.  Our main objective is to get as many sailors as we can out on the water and have fun while still having competitive racing.

For those interested in crewing or racing their boat, come down to our skippers meeting at 10:15 a.m. on most Sundays at Gibsons Marina (675 Prowse Rd) and we’ll try to find you a ride or get you started. Check out our website for more information about membership or join our available crew list https://www.scycsailing.ca

Experienced racers will find good competition and interesting and scenic courses to sail.
