It will be a Halloween like no other. Some will have candy chutes or gloves stuffed with treats. Some have cancelled plans altogether. I am having difficulty making it feel special because for seven months I’ve been wearing a mask and gorging myself on candy, so for me it’s just another Saturday night. But there will be fireworks, so that will be different. There will be complaints about fireworks, so that will make it feel a wee bit normal. According to my research (OK, lurking on Facebook) at least two of the living legends of Mossy Rock, the Dugal and Keith households, will be spookin’ it up again this year. We should really set up an adult section at the crossroads, maybe a cash bar with bloody Marys? I may go as Kevin Kennelly again.
Some things are still on, yet, like the rest of our world, a bit differently. Friday, Oct. 30, at the Hall, from 3-5 p.m., our Community Association has put together an EEK the Creek! There is a movie playing indoors and an outdoor hunt open to everyone for FREE. Prizes will include treats and books. (Kids under eight need to be chaperoned.) You know the drill. (“OH NO! Not the DRILL!” – Megamind.) COVID protocol will be strictly followed. Thanks to RCCA, London Drugs, IGA and Canadian Tire for this event. There will be a Halloween photo backdrop set up with a professional photographer to snap a spooktacular photo. Photos and Halloween hunt are by appointment. Book here: https://bookedin.com/book/rcca
A BIG shoutout from the Community School and the community at large to the Barefoot Gecko for their generous donation of a beautiful picnic table! This will be enjoyed in the Roberts Creek Community Garden for years to come.
The Official Community Planning Committee election for new members is coming up on Nov. 24. Please think about getting involved with your community through this 11-member committee. The OCPC works to see that changes within Roberts Creek follow OCP guidelines while taking into account that it must be relevant to today’s challenges. The group receives referrals from the SCRD for comment, advises Andreas Tize, our SCRD representative, on community issues and acts as a lobby group on behalf of Creekers. If you would like to know more about the OCPC or if you would consider running as a candidate, please contact the chair, Elaine Futterman, at [email protected]. She would love to hear from you!
It looks like Lower Road has taken on a new moniker at the three corners (in front of the Café ... do we have another name for that intersection? The heart? Blueberry corners?) with the addition of a sign proclaiming it “Slower Rd” or perhaps it’s been there for a while and I have just noticed it? It’s a bit of a mystery. If you know the background, please fill me in.
Be safe, be kind, have fun and don’t eat all your kids’ candy (Dad tax is 12 per cent by the way, gets them used to the real world).
