From high schoolers: Thoughts about Earth Day

'We as a planet and community should do more about the climate crisis daily, rather than put in effort once a year.'
Earth Day

As Earth Day is right around the corner, I decided to ask some Grade 12 students what their thoughts are regarding Earth Day:

“I think Earth Day is a good opportunity for people to remind themselves that everyone needs to do their part in taking care of the planet.”

“I think it’s a good vision and it’s good to appreciate the planet we live on, however, I don’t think Earth Day does anything for the Earth. There may be places around the world that are actually doing something to help the Earth on Earth Day, but from my experience it’s mainly a day people post about (including myself) and say how much we love the Earth. Most people do not actually do anything to help the Earth on Earth Day. We should be cleaning up garbage on beaches, roads etc. instead of just verbally expressing our love for Earth.”

”I think it’s dumb that we have one specific day that people all of a sudden feel good about themselves and helping the Earth, when it should be everyday actions.”

“We as a planet and community should do more about the climate crisis daily, rather than put in effort once a year. People should do research, plant more trees and plant more bee friendly plants #savethebees.”

Although these opinions vary, the main focus point in many of the responses I received are about how people should celebrate Earth Day every day. It’s important as a community to put in effort to keep our Earth and home safe and healthy.
