Final fling in Pender

Six Sunshine Coast dragon boat teams finished the race season in sunshine at the second annual Final Fling in Garden Bay on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Six Sunshine Coast dragon boat teams finished the race season in sunshine at the second annual Final Fling in Garden Bay on Saturday, Sept. 26.

One hundred and twenty paddlers from Powell River, Pender Harbour, Sechelt and Gibsons, some experienced and some new this season, paddled two 250-metre races, lunched together and then took to the water again for a tricky obstacle race including "hooping" a buoy, inflating balloons and turning a 16-metre long boat 360 degrees, all while paddling hard!

Overall winners were MacKenzie Mussels of Sechelt, who celebrated by drinking bubbly from the new cup presented by Gibsons Paddle Club's Dragon Boat Division.

A silent auction was held by Sunshine Dragons Abreast for the CIBC Run for the Cure in Vancouver, Oct. 4. The Run, held across Canada, raises money for breast cancer research and support. A second auction, raffles and a 50/50 draw were held for the Pender Harbour Paddling Club that paddles out of the Garden Bay Pub.

An information meeting for new paddlers interested in the April to September 2010 season will be in January. Email [email protected] or watch Coast Reporter for more details in December.
