Elphinstone Chronicles: Bears, frogs and hiking

The spring frog chorus has begun

Diane Henley will speak about Bear Awareness at the Elphinstone Community Association (ECA) meeting on Wednesday, March 16. As bears begin to emerge from their dens, it’s important to understand about these “neighbours.”

At the February ECA meeting, residents voiced concerns about erosion along Chaster Park and Ocean Beach Esplanade especially apparent following the latest king tides. Together with a representative of the local neighbourhood association, Rod Moorcroft wrote letters to both the SCRD and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure requesting remediation and road repairs, citing safety and the need to prevent further damage to this much-loved pedestrian walking route. In the letter, Rod states, “The eastern end of the Esplanade is very close to Chaster Creek, which experienced significant flooding, contributing to the erosion of Ocean Beach Esplanade.” Note that Area E Director Donna McMahon will update us with an SCRD report. Contact [email protected] for the Zoom code. Everyone welcome.

I joined a sizable group of enthusiastic hikers on Monday, part of the Spring Hiking Series sponsored by the Living Forest Institute: www.livingforestinstitute.ca This season there are two series, the Monday morning hikes are easier and shorter; the next two will be on March 21 (Health Trail) and 28 (Day Road Forest), starting at 10 a.m. Regular Saturday morning hikes will take place on March 19 and 26, also starting at 10 a.m.; the first in ts’uk’wum (Wilson Creek) forest and the second along the Old Wagon Road Trail. Bob says their aim in offering these free hikes is to “Give the public an opportunity to get out and experience some of our beautiful nature trails,” and advises, “Every trail will have some roots, rocks and small brooks, so participants should have a reasonable level of agility.” For more details see the Living Forest Institute site or contact Bob at [email protected] for the details.

Sticking with the outdoor theme, the frog chorus has begun! Each year I wait with bated breath, hoping that the tree frogs inhabiting our nearby ditch will not have been killed off by a spill or something else. For my sake, if not for the frogs – please don’t put garbage and especially not noxious substances into ditches! Keep in mind that ditch water often ends up in the tributaries of our local creeks. When I hear the nighttime, almost deafening chorus of tree frogs, I know all is right with (this part of) the world. That said, now more than ever, we need John Lennon and his mantra of ”Give Peace a Chance.”

Cedar Grove PAC has two fundraisers: Purdy’s Easter Campaign and Mom’s Pantry cookie dough and muffin batter campaign. The deadline for Purdy’s is March 22 and order pickup date is Tuesday March 29. Here’s the link to shop for somebunny special in your life: fundraising.purdys.com/1370771-93079. There are a limited number of catalogues available to CGE parents by contacting the school office.

Have you seen the amazing life-size people signs along Chaster Road asking people to slow down? So realistic and they are apparently having an effect. Good work Cedar Grove PAC!
