Darcy Long of Sechelt has been nominated and selected as Rotary International district governor of Rotary District 5040 for 2018-19. As governor, Long will provide leadership to clubs throughout the district. District 5040 is comprised of 1,500 members in 50 clubs in an area stretching from Vancouver to Prince George and Terrace. She will assume office July 1, 2018.
Long is one of 532 Rotarians worldwide nominated as a district governor this year. A member of the Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast-Sechelt for nine years, Long will also be responsible for organizing new Rotary clubs and strengthening existing ones.
Long has been active in the Sunshine Coast business community for many years, owning and operating fuel distribution and hospitality businesses. She has a strong record of leadership and leadership development in Rotary with past roles as club president, District Foundation Committee co-chair and District Conference Committee chair.
Rotary clubs on the Sunshine Coast, and throughout District 5040 are involved in many local and international service activities. Rotary clubs on the Coast build parks and playgrounds, provide scholarships and funds to community groups, coordinate international youth exchanges and organize many events that engage people in the community.
Beyond the local scene, Rotary organizes and funds water projects, education, health and peace programs around the world. Rotary is a key player in the global effort to eradicate polio.
