Creating awareness about mental illness

The Sunshine Coast branch of the B.C. Schizophrenia Society in partnership with Arrowhead Centre Society and Sunshine Coast Community Services Society are hosting a one-day conference "Living with a Mental Illness: A Community Approach," thanks to a grant received from Sunshine Coast Community Foundation.

The conference takes place on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Chatelech Secondary School Theatre. Cost is by donation, and a light lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Conference speakers include medical experts Dr. Tom Ehmann, Dr. Bill MacEwan and Dr. Erin Michalak; executive director of Mood Disorder Association Rennie Hoffman; executive director Tom Burnell of Open Door Group; local service representatives; family members and people with a mental illness. Panel discussions will touch on medical information, stigma and community resources.

Also featured in the program is renowned actress, comedian and mental health advocate Victoria Maxwell, who will perform her acclaimed one-woman show Funny, You Don't Look Crazy. See more at www.victoriamaxwell.com

The conference is open and free to the public. The purpose of this event is to educate and create awareness about mental illness with the intent to reduce stigma, assist those impacted by it, and motivate the community to support and provide opportunities to those affected.
