COVID-conscious cookie caper is still on

St. John’s United Church is offering a COVID-conscious cookie caper sale on Saturday, Dec. 12, starting at 9 a.m. “Drive-buy” 5085 Davis Bay Rd. and pick up your boxes of fresh home-baked Christmas cookies.

It wouldn’t be Christmas on the Coast without the St. John’s United Church Cookie Caper, and everything’s in place to “drive-buy” the church in Davis Bay on Saturday, Dec. 12 and get a box or two of fresh home-baked cookies just in time for Christmas.

“The biggest difference is that people won’t get to choose their own selection of cookies this year,” says organizer Laura Mann.

Following all of the protocols set out by WorkSafeBC and the provincial health office, a few volunteers will box cookies up so that the Cookie Caper can continue.

Gingerbread, shortbread, rumballs, lebkuchen, French button cookies – it’s almost an institution on the Coast,” says Mann, who figures the bakers of St. John’s have offered this Christmas cookie extravaganza for close to 15 years.

Mann has been one of the lead organizers since the Cookie Caper began, saying several of the bakers make over 100 dozen cookies each year. “There’s so much joy from start to finish.”

Everyone at the church from young to old gets into the spirit of baking cookies. “One of the gifts of Christmas is seeing the pride of our children who have made cookies for others without expecting anything in return.”

Starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, people can drive through the St. John’s United Church parking lot at 5085 Davis Bay Rd. and pick up boxes of cookies for $20. Cash, credit, debit, and e-transfer are all being accepted. A percentage of the sales is being donated to the SC Food Bank. For more information, see their website at https://www.stjohns-united.org.

Fingers crossed, neither COVID nor the Grinch will stop this cookie caper.
