Basketball fever is at an all-time high on the Sunshine Coast, thanks to the efforts of Bob Hoy who has been nurturing a small group of boys for the past several summers with outdoor practices and a final game with the UBC Thunderbirds. What was lacking were regulation-height nets at Roberts Creek School, which meant that Creeker kids had to bus to the new Gibsons Elementary School outdoor courts just to play ball.
On the initiative of a young Noah Woodin, a basketball enthusiast, in conversation with Bob Hoy and RCCES principal Christa Rive, the plan was set in motion to come up with the money for new 10-ft.-high outdoor nets at Roberts Creek School.
After much conversation with the SCRD, SD46, Noah, Bob and Christa, the dream was realized. Thanks to the generous community sponsors who came forward: David Longman, Gibsons Rotary Club, Dennis Turenne, Bill Humphries, and Bob Hoy. Without them this could not have happened so quickly; without Bob’s vision this would have been just a dream.
There was a shortfall in funds for the final amount so a committed crew of young local basketball players gathered pledges for a 10K run which took place on a recent rainy Sunday. They raised almost $1,500 and had the opportunity to do something for the common good of our community, for all those who will now enjoy the courts this summer. RCCES is the hub of our Creek community and it’s great to see kids of all ages enjoying the new nets.
Roberts Creek School is hosting a hot lunch fundraiser supported by Curry in the Creek to help pay to have official lines painted on the courts. We hope to see many of our children taking the opportunity to grab a ball and hit the court.
