It’s bonspiel weekend in Gibsons

A mural of a curler graces the wall of the Gibsons Curling Club along Highway 101.

A curling bonspiel is a curling tournament, for those not familiar with the term. And this short story is really for you, those not too familiar with this great game. So many people have never actually seen curling other than on television. In fact, many of you may not even realize that there’s curling right here on the Sunshine Coast, in Gibsons.

We’re the big building on the right as you’re driving into Gibsons from Sechelt, the one with the mural of the curler sliding right at you.

Starting on the evening of Friday, Jan. 20, and right through until Sunday afternoon of the 22nd, you can come and see curling for yourself. Gibsons Curling Club is hosting the Gibsons Curling Club Open Bonspiel this weekend.

An “Open Bonspiel” means that men and women are participating in the same event.

There may be mixed teams, men’s teams, women’s team, no matter. This is about a weekend of fun for all, celebrating the game of curling. We have out-of-town curlers coming too.

The public is more than welcome to come on in and watch for themselves.  Just come on upstairs to the lounge, enjoy a beverage, and find a seat at the window.

If you don’t know or understand the game, there’ll be lots of folks there to explain. And, when the curling’s done, if you’re interested in learning more, or participating yourself, we’ll give you all the information you’ll need to come on out and try this great sport.

Curling looks pretty easy on television. We hope we see you at the window above the ice this weekend to see for yourself. Come on out and enjoy “The Roaring Game.” It’s really not that easy, but it surely is fun.
