Combating the pine beetle epidemic

The next meeting of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society will be all about the pine beetle.

The next meeting of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society will be all about the pine beetle.

On Friday, April 5, come hear speaker Michael Bradley give a talk dealing with the combination of factors that led to the current unprecedented epidemic of mountain pine beetle in Western Canada and the dominant impact made by a warming climate. The talk will also describe some of the resulting economic and social impacts and whether lessons can be drawn for addressing other ecological tipping points faced by the world today.

Bradley has been responsible for the technology and sustainability activities of a major B.C. pulp and paper producer for more than two decades.

In 2000, he was a founding member of the process leading to the Great Bear Rainforest agreement.

Regarding complex environmental challenges, he is a passionate believer in Kelvin's dictum, that if you haven't measured something, you cannot understand it. He is an active member of the Society of Environmental Toxicologists and Chemists and the International Association of Scientific Papermakers. He lives in Roberts Creek.

The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt. All are welcome.
