Coast chapter welcomes Garth Jones

Royal Astronomical Society of Canada

The Sunshine Coast chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada welcomes guest speaker Garth Jones at its next meeting on Friday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt.

Jones, who is a member of the RASC, is a professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia. From 1955 to ‘56 he worked for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. He was a junior research scientist from 1959 to ‘61 at Clarendon Laboratory at the University of Oxford and a professor of physics at UBC from 1961 to ‘97. He is now a board member of the Elder College of the Sechelt campus of Capilano University.

His topic will be cosmic distances. The awesome size of the universe is hard to grasp and even harder to measure. Jones explains ways that these measurements are done.
