CFUW accepting applications

In difficult economic times, many women try to improve their lives and the lives of their children by returning to school to upgrade their employment prospects. Others who are studying at college or university may have to postpone their attendance if their partners and family can no longer assist with the tuition for their studies.

Members of the Canadian University Women's Club (Sunshine Coast) appreciate that their education enabled them to have enriched lives, and they now work to offer this privilege to other women.

In 1990, the CFUW-SC registered their membership as a bursary society in order to give tax receipts to donors. They raise funds at special events and from among their members to assist local women who plan to attend accredited post-secondary institutions. Since 1990, they have awarded $93,000 in bursaries. Past recipients have pursued a wide range of studies: education, health care, archeology, business administration, First Nations studies, financial management and nursing.

Last year, the society awarded 12 bursaries - two at $500, four at $750 and six at $1,000. Recipients, when expressing appreciation for the help with tuition, will often remark how the gift of being chosen meant as much to them as the financial assistance. Knowing someone has chosen them often inspires their determination to succeed.

The CFUW-SC bursary society is currently accepting applications from mature women living on the Sunshine Coast. More information and an application form can be found at www.cfuwsc.org/bursary.html or call 604-886-5856. Deadline for applying is May 20.
