While Earth Day (April 22) acts as an annual reminder to take an active role in protecting and preserving the environment, the Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast ReStore provides the opportunity for Coasters to practice these principles year round.
"The Sechelt ReStore provides our community with the opportunity to celebrate Earth Day and honour the environment every day," said Ken Croizier, vice chair of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. "By purchasing or donating gently-used home improvement materials at the downtown Sechelt ReStore, we can practise the 3Rs and reduce our environmental footprint."
Each year, the 74 ReStores across the country together divert thousands of tonnes of waste from Canadian landfills, including more than 21,000 tonnes of material in 2011 alone. By accepting and reselling quality new and used home products from consumers, as well as end-of-line, scratch-and-dent, discontinued inventory, paint mistints and customer returns from retailers and manufacturers, ReStores ensure products are reused rather than wasted.
On top of helping the environment, ReStores also help low-income families own a home of their own - all proceeds from the local ReStore go to Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast to help provide safe, decent, affordable housing to local families in need.
Consumers can expect to find materials such as windows, doors, appliances, paint, hardware, tools, furniture, lighting fixtures and even burlap bags at the Sechelt ReStore. Shoppers are encouraged to visit the store regularly, as new items arrive daily. The ReStore also accepts reusable building materials and will ensure the products find a new home.
