Botanical Garden’s Merry Little Christmas

Pender Harbour Choir
garden

Musical director Joy McLeod conducted the Pender Harbour Choir at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden on Dec. 12. McLeod moved to the West Coast from Winnipeg 21 years ago, where she performed with the Winnipeg Philharmonic.

Kenneth Norman Johnson conducted the Choir performing Castles in the Snow, which Johnson wrote in 2014 as the theme for his Christmas musical of the same name. Piano soloist David Poon (centre) performed selections from Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Op 15.

Poon studied Gregorian chant and choral polyphony at UBC. He lives in Gibsons with his wife Sarah and two children.

Other performers inlcuded Sass – previously Sasspenders – performing Stopping by Woods on Snowy Evening written as a poem by Robert Frost, and Pamela Wood, who sang O Holy Night, written by French composer Adolphe Adam in 1847.

The Botanical Garden will be aglow Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays from 5 to 8 p.m. throughout December for their Winter Lights event with a special treat each evening. Come see the trees lit up for the festive season and enjoy live music, popcorn or an old-fashioned marshmallow roast. See http://coastbotanicalgarden.org for details.
