The Angel Tree Project's Phoenix Program is seeking sponsorship.

"We want to help graduating students get to their proms and grad events that they would otherwise not be able to attend due to not having the proper attire," said Angel Tree spokesperson Donna Gopp.

"As adults we know the response 'naw, I'm not gonna go to that thing' is another way of saying 'I don't have the right clothes, etc. etc. and don't want to be embarrassed or put an additional strain on family finances.' They would rather do without.

"The Angel Tree Project does not want them to do without. We would like to provide rented tuxes or dresses, gently worn or reasonably priced grad outfits. We think important life achievements need to be celebrated. Being able to participate in a positive rite of passage may encourage or change the direction of their lives for the better. It might also help these kids know the Sunshine Coast community cares about them and is proud of their success."

The Angel Tree Project relies completely on donations and fundraising efforts. "We have an annual fund-raiser of a gingerbread house building contest. This year it will be a gingerbread haunted house building contest to be held in Gibsons," she said. "We have garage sales, bottle returns, raffles, etc. These fundraisers usually raise enough money for the families in need we assist over the winter holidays.

"However, this year we have had such an outcry for food that we just don't have the funds to get this new project off the ground and we need help. We call this project the Phoenix Program. From ashes to the sky's the limit for these young people."

Your donation will allow these students' good efforts to be recognized and could well encourage them to stay on the path to success. To get involved in this program, contact Tara at 604-989-9929 or email [email protected].
