An evening of celebration

Sappho's Circle and the Pride Committee of the Sunshine Coast present an evening of celebration on June 29 at Roberts Creek Community Hall to mark 42 years since the Stonewall Riots.

Sappho's Circle and the Pride Committee of the Sunshine Coast present an evening of celebration on June 29 at Roberts Creek Community Hall to mark 42 years since the Stonewall Riots.

The riots mark a time when, for the first time in North American history, lesbian and gay people fought back against a government sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities. The riots define the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

To commemorate this historical date, there will be a Stonewall Pride on the Coast event headlining American singer-songwriter Yvette Narlock, who has performed with k.d. lang, and featuring DJ SHE from Vancouver, spoken word by Adelene Da Soul Poet and an opening speech from Powell River - Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons.

The event is a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Child & Youth Suicide Prevention Committee.

Doors open at 7 p.m. with performances and dance from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Tickets are available on-line at www.sunshinecoastpride.com and from MELOmania, Shanti Gifts and Gaia's Fair Trade. Tickets are $15, $20 and $25 on a sliding scale and will be available on event night, but you are advised to buy in advance.
