Learn about bird photography from Mike Yip at the next meeting of the Sunshine Coast Natural History Society (SCNHS) on Nov. 2 in Sechelt.
The meeting and presentation starts at 7:30 p.m. next Friday night at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre (located at Trail and Medusa). Refreshments will be served and society memberships will be available.
Yip will give an illustrated presentation on how one can start taking bird pictures, by discussing the different kinds of bird photography that exist and the equipment and conditions necessary to obtain the best pictures. He will cover post picture procedures, such as image manipulation, storage, handling, printing and publication.
Yip's interest in photography began in 2003 when he discovered an unusual, large-billed duck, a Northern shoveller, in Nanoose Bay. He said his pictures at that time were "a flop," but the spark was lit and he persevered in his photography efforts. He has become incredibly adept at obtaining striking bird photos and is today one of the best bird photographers in Canada. He is a successful author, having self-published books entitled Vancouver Island Birds and Denman & Hornby Nature.
He has a website on Vancouver Island birds, contributes photos to environmental and educational programs around the world, writes a bi-monthly bird column for the North Islander and is a regular presenter at clubs, schools and special events.
