The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD), Sechelt and Gibsons will share in a $15,000 age-friendly communities grant.

The grants are jointly administered by the province and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities.

The money earmarked for the Sunshine Coast will be used to create an age-friendly/accessible trails guide, highlighting trails that are suitable for people of all ages and various levels of mobility and endurance.

“Accessible health services, connections with neighbours, options for physical activity all help make graceful aging more possible,” said Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons in a release announcing the grant. “These grants ensure older people will have local champions to encourage them to continue to play an active role in the community.”

About $587,000 in age-friendly grants will be distributed this year.
