Did you know that a third of the Sunshine Coast’s greenhouse gases come from vehicle travel?

This May, Transportation Choices-Sunshine Coast (TraC) is organizing Active Transportation Month to introduce healthier and more environmentally conscious travel options to residents, reduce the Coast’s dependence on single-occupancy-vehicle travel, and ultimately reduce emissions on the Coast.

Join local government, businesses, and others who have planned a variety of fun events that encourage sustainable transportation for all ages throughout the month.

For the past eight years TraC, a member-based non-profit organization, has sponsored Bike to Work (and School) Week. This year it has expanded its focus from one week to a full month for all forms of sustainable transportation and for all trips. This change will allow more Coasters to participate than in previous years by including more flexible travel options, such as taking public transit, walking, rollerblading, kayaking, driving electric vehicles, carpooling and any other creative and healthy ways to get around.

Governments, businesses and individuals have been extremely supportive of the initiative, offering to sponsor events, donating their time to man celebration stations for active commuters, and establishing internal competitions for single-occupancy-vehicle kilometres reduced.

Active Transportation Month kicks off on April 28, to celebrate Earth Day in Roberts Creek. There are two biking groups heading from Gibsons and Davis Bay to meet in Roberts Creek for the annual festival organized by the Sea to Sky Outdoor School.

There are many other exciting active-centred events to join and communities, organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate in existing events or organize their own. Anyone wishing to sponsor or host an Active Transportation Month event should contact TraC or see their website at www.transportationchoices.ca for more information.
