A Burnaby student from the University of British Columbia (UBC) Sauder School of Business has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship in recognition of academic achievements and commitment to community service in Canada and abroad.

Jonathan Chan was one of the recipients of the International Business Scholarship, part of Export Development Canada's (EDC) 2023 youth education program, in which 27 students across Canada were chosen for awards from 700 applicants.

Chan is a fourth-year student specializing in accounting, organizational behaviour and human resources.

Twenty of the recipients were awarded the International Business Scholarship, while seven received the new Community Leadership Scholarships, awarded to students from equity-seeking communities.Aside from their academic standing, the students who received the community leadership scholarships were chosen for their dedication to supporting their communities through extracurricular and volunteer initiatives.

In an emailed statement to the NOW, Chan said, the scholarship will allow him to continue to give back to the community through social entrepreneurship initiatives in Africa.

“[It will allow me to] gain exposure to cross-cultural collaboration through my international exchange at the Copenhagen Business School, and participate in and organize international case competitions,” Chan said.

According to EDC’s website, over $2 million and more than 600 business scholarships have been awarded through its youth education program since 2000.

The recipients will also be eligible for recruitment into EDC’s work term and co-op placements, as well as receive additional mentorship and learning opportunities.
