RISING TEMPERATURE: The qathet region has been experiencing blue skies and higher temperatures during the day, but nightly temperatures are still hovering around zero to three degrees. Dog walkers and lunchtime wanderers made their way to Willingdon Beach to catch some sun rays around noon Thursday, April 18.

According to an Environment and Climate Change Canada alert, the 2023/2024 winter was the warmest in Canada since record-keeping began.

"Temperatures were above normal from coast to coast to coast during the meteorological winter, which runs from December 1 through the end of February."

The qathet region experienced an average daytime temperature this week of 14 degrees Celsius, dropping to a chilly zero to three degrees in the evening. Gardeners may be putting off planting outside due to the cold.

Tomorrow, Friday, April 19, the temperature will be up to 16 degrees in the daytime, and then back down to 12 degrees with showers on Saturday and Sunday.

“In Canada, moderate or stronger El Niño conditions are associated with warmer and drier than normal conditions across the majority of southern Canada,” indicated Environment Canada. “This winter was no exception, as very strong El Niño conditions contributed to abnormal warmth extending across most of the country.”
