The Coast Recital Society opens their 2019-20 concert season on Saturday, Sept. 21, with a spectacular trio of musicians well known to Sunshine Coast audiences: Nikki Chooi, Timothy Chooi, violins, and Angela Cheng, piano. The concert at the Raven’s Cry Theatre begins at 2:30 p.m. with a pre-concert chat hosted by CRS President John Storer at 1:30 p.m.

Nikki Chooi has received critical acclaim for concerts at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall, Vancouver’s Recital Society, and as soloist with orchestras across Canada including the Montréal Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic and internationally with the St. Petersburg State Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Wallonie, Malaysian Philharmonic, and Hong Kong Philharmonic. Nikki Chooi has recently been named concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic.

Timothy Chooi recently won Second Prize at Belgium’s prestigious 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition. He had already made a name for himself after being awarded numerous prizes, among them First Prize of the 2018 Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition in Germany. In 2018 he also won the Prix Yves Paternot at the Verbier Festival as the most promising and accomplished musician of the Verbier Academy for young musicians, earning him his solo debut in the 2020 Verbier Festival.

Praised for her brilliant technique, tonal beauty, and superb musicianship, Angela Cheng is truly one of Canada’s national treasures. She has appeared as a soloist with more than 100 orchestras. She tours worldwide with violinist Pinchas Zukermann and the Zukerman Chamber Players, gives master classes, and has served on the jury of many competitions. Cheng was Gold Medalist of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition, as well as the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Competition.

These wonderful musicians will perform music by Shostakovich, Debussy, Chaminade, Franck, and the world premiere of Rêverie by pianist/composer Marc-André Hamelin, commissioned by the Vancouver Recital Society, marking their 40th anniversary season.
