Art Show

Paula O’Brien and Bruce Edwards join forces in Paintings from My Travels to bring you their plein air paintings from journeys around the world to the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre. The show opens with a reception on Sunday, Aug. 26. Their exhibition shares the Doris Crowston Gallery with Alison J. Taylor’s The Physics of Being, oil paintings loosely based on diagrams from physics text books.

Plein air painting, the act of painting outdoors, is a style of art that can incorporate everything from sketching to oil and watercolours and can even be done with mobile devices. O’Brien likens plein air to going fishing: “Sometimes you come home with something wonderful and tasty and sometimes the experience is more rewarding than the finished outcome.” She came to painting via work in textiles, wearable art and mixed media.

Edwards has been a muralist, instructor and graphic designer for more than 20 years. Since 2001 he has travelled the world painting and teaching. His travels have taken him to Togo, West Africa; the Oglag Sioux Reservation, South Dakota; Homer, Alaska; and Tucson, Arizona. He comments that he tries “not to take it for granted that pigment and brush will produce a recognizable image or interesting shape, and if it does, even after so many years, I am amazed.”

Alison J. Taylor’s journey as an artist started as a teenager, but early on an interest in physics and computer science diverted her. In this exhibition, she invites the viewer to consider parallels between the processes studied in physics and experiences of human psychology. The opening reception on Sunday, Aug. 26 is from 2 to 4 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1:30 p.m., all three artists will be on hand to meet the public. Taylor will discuss her work while O’Brien and Edwards will give a joint demonstration of the plein air experience. For more information, see www.sunshinecoastartscouncil.com

Nuts Auditions

Auditions for the seventh presentation of Coasting Along Theatre Society’s The Nutcracker will be held at the Coast Academy of Dance in Sechelt on Sunday, Sept. 9. Dancers and acrobats must be at least seven years old by Dec. 31 to audition. Adults in Act I don’t have to audition, but must meet with artistic director Kathleen Holmes beforehand. There are roles for talented artists – jugglers, stilt walkers, gymnasts. Dancers must be currently taking ballet classes at any one of the studios on the Coast. The rehearsals are on the weekends (younger dancers have their rehearsals on Saturdays only) until December. The production has traditional choreography enhanced by Holmes. She enjoys challenging the dancers each year, and loves to show off their strengths. “Each dancer has unique qualities and it’s nice to showcase their skills, but it’s also lovely not to put them in a rut, and to work with them to show them they have more strengths then they thought they had!” she said, adding that there will be multiple casts. For audition times and more information, see www.coastingalongtheatre.org or email [email protected]

Hosted by the Sunshine Coast Spinners and Weavers Guild, all fibre enthusiasts are welcome. Join others for spinning, weaving, felting, knitting or whatever fibre handwork interests you.
