Cedar weaving
The Sunshine Coast Museum and Archives is pleased to invite self-taught master weaver Jessica Casey back for a workshop. She will be sharing her knowledge of the traditional Coast Salish ways of cedar bark harvesting, stripping and weaving.
On Saturday participants meet at Starbucks in Tsain-Ko Village Shopping Centre in Sechelt at 9 a.m. and head for the forest where Casey will demonstrate the technique of cedar bark stripping. Back at the museum they will learn how to cut and split the cedar strips into suitable sizes for weaving.
On Sunday participants spend the day at the museum making a cedar bark basket. To pre-register, call 604-886-8232 or [email protected]. Fibreworks
Drop by Drop, the work of Catherine Nicholls and Elizabeth Harris Nichols, opens Saturday, at Fibreworks Studio and Gallery near Madeira Park with an artist reception from 2 to 4 p.m.The two artists have joined forces to create a body of work that celebrates the water that is, has been and will always be. Provocative writing
Ron Sakolsky of Denman Island Anarchist Surrealistlaunches his incredible book of provocative writingswithcover art by Roberts Creek artist M. Spiraat Strait Coffee in Wilson Creek on Saturday at 7 p.m.The event includes live, unrestrained musical innovations with Graham Ord and Giorgio Magnanensi, two of the Coast's musical talents.
Baroque and Blue 2
Gibsons United Church presents Baroque and Blue 2 plus friends in another evening of light music on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the church located at 724 Trueman at Glassford Road.
The evening is a fundraiser for the church. Tickets are $15, available at Laedeli in Sunnycrest Mall, Gaia's Fair Trade in Lower Gibsons and at the door if not sold out.
Leaping Thespians
Once Upon a Lesbian, original comedy by Leaping Thespians Theatre Group is at the Roberts Creek Hall on Saturday at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:30). The Leaping Thespians return to the stage with a revised and updated version of their original production, a futuristic comedy that tells the story of two anthropologists who live in a satirical dystopia where physical touch and eye contact have been outlawed. The two women are sent on a mission to recover a time capsule left behind from 2169. Note that this is adult content. Tickets are $15 advance, $18 door, available at Gaia's Fair Trade, MELOmania and Strait Music.
Vivaldi Chamber Choir
The Vivaldi Chamber Choir from Vancouverwill bepresenting a concert at St. Hilda's Anglican Church in Sechelt on Sunday, at 2 p.m.
The concert, titled My Heart's in the Highlands, features traditional songs from the lands of the Celts, including North American offshoots from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, with Celtic harp (Elisa Thorn) and uilleann pipes (Greg Schnider), plus a special guest appearance by soprano Sara Douglas.

Author event
Claudia Cornwall's skillfully written biography/memoir, At the World's Edge: Curt Lang's Vancouver, 1937-1998 (foreword by David Beers, introduction by Greg Lang, Mother Tongue Publishing $29.95), has vividly brought to life an era and a way of life that has all but vanished.The author will be giving a lively and free illustrated talk about Curt Lang on June 20 at Bluewaters Books at 12887 Madeira Park Rd. from 1 to 3 p.m. and in Sechelt at the public library on June 21 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
New at 101
In June, One-O-One Office Supply on Cowrie Street in Sechelt is displaying a few samples of work by local Brian Klassen. He has married his background in CAD and building architectural models with map-making to create a unique line of sailing charts. Designed and produced by Klassen using a laser-cutting machine, the charts become topographical maps of local bodies of land and the ocean features surrounding them. The results are attractive pieces of functional art inspired by the experience of coastal life. The spring show of quilts from the Out of Bounds group also remains on display until the end of June.
