The Roberts Creek Legacy Garden, located on School District No. 46 property adjacent to Roberts Creek Elementary School, will function as a vibrant centre for community capacity building, with citizens as drivers and stewards of the project. With a beautiful post-and-beam pavilion at its centre and an inviting arbour flanking the school entrance, the project continues to evolve thanks to the ongoing support of the business community.
Gibsons Home Hardware has enthusiastically contributed a substantial donation of tools that have made recent work parties much easier. An amazing crew of school and community volunteers have stepped up to support all aspects of the garden, whether it be climbing on the pavilion roof, helping students to plant, removing blackberries, or spreading hundreds of yards of mulch.
In the fall, Gibsons Building Supplies offered a full day of machine work to safely lift plant trays to the roof of the community/school pavilion. It was an exciting day for all, closely supervised by garden designer and major business partner, Periplum Designs owner Larry Popowich. In early December, Larry worked closely with sponsors David and Ben of de Kleer Enterprises to place several large rocks (donated by Cloutier Holdings), haul away repurposed materials and organics and remove three tons of roots from the front of the property. The site is now cleared and ready for paths and beds.
The children are eager to begin planting in this area and in the large garden boxes that now flank the school entrance to the garden. Kurt Vernon of Vernon Construction kindly mentored Roberts Creek Elementary School Grade 6/7 students in the construction project. The students were justifiably proud of their accomplishment.
Major funders of the Roberts Creek Legacy Garden include: Roberts Creek Community School, School District No. 46, the Sunshine Coast Regional District and the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation.
