The Wardens ride into Gumboot Nation

Gumboot Nation

A great excuse to go out on a Tuesday: Nov. 5 the Gumboot Cafe presents the Wardens (actual Banff Park Wardens!). Writing from a place in the world where wilderness exists in abundance, where you can slip on hiking boots and disappear for weeks on end, where you can drink the water right out of the creeks and where you inhale the crystal clear air (not unlike our own backyard), the Wardens weave authentic stories of our western wilderness into song to bring you a not to be missed show. Playing over 50 shows a year in theatres, at festivals, house concerts and community halls, they bring stories rich in a uniquely Canadian culture. Local pickers and grinners, The Billy Hillpicker Band, are an apt choice to warm your hearts and start your toes tapping for an evening to remember. $12 well spent, 7 p.m.

The Little Legion once again hosts Brain Freeze Trivia. Every first Friday of the month (That’s Nov.1!). The gauntlet has been thrown down! Bring a team or make one up there. Let the games begin (at 7:45 sharp!).

Halloween may be over for the kiddies but the grownups are ready to get freaky. Day of the Dead at Legion 219, Saturday, Nov. 2. Celebrating love, life, death and community spirit. A diverse night of music with deep and funky DJs Aerion and Jason Whyte. $100 prize for best costume for whomever makes the special effort to bring the steeziest outfit! Themed decorations, slick lighting and amazing visual mapping promise max eye candy. With a capacity of a scant 130, I have been told this may sell out, so arrive early to avoid disappointment. Doors and music at 9 p.m. $10 for members, $20 for guests.

This coming Thursday, Nov. 7, from 6-9 p.m. is the second annual Burger and Beer Fundraiser at the 101 Brewhouse in Gibsons. While outside of the Gumboot Nation, the proceeds from this event go to Roberts Creek Elementary School PAC. $25 includes one burger and one beer (vegetarian and non-alcoholic options are available) with a silent auction to bid on, generously donated by local businesses and parents. A parents’ social featuring live music, the Burger and Beer Fundraiser is a great way to enjoy a good time out while supporting the students and staff of our local school. Tickets at share-there.com

For the second time since the passing of longtime owner Walter, our General Store has changed hands. It is an honour to speak for the community in welcoming Mr. Kim and his wife Monika to the Creek as its new proprietors. Formerly with Shop Easy in Alberta, Mr. Kim promises no price changes but will bring in more grocery items to help supply our needs. He remarked that we were a kind and friendly bunch in a peaceful place. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Remembrance Day, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. after.
