Caring souls clean up daily in Sargeant Bay

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful week and are holding up during our winter storms, with all the wind, rain and power outages. We are very thankful for those that brave the terrible weather to bring light and power back to our homes on those rare times we lose power. Around this time last year, we were digging out from a huge snow event which lasted three days. We are very thankful that this year the temperatures have been quite mild so far, leaving the snow shovels in the garden shed.

Some concerned residents and frequent visitors to Sargeant Bay Provincial Park have shared some troubling findings while beachcombing along the park’s small but beautiful water’s edge. Sara posted some photos taken after collecting a wide variety of debris that has washed up on shore. Sara says, “My heart is heavy. We gotta do a whole lot better than this!” Locals and daily visitors to the park have advised that they too have collected a vast amount of garbage including plastic bottle caps, syringes, cigar plastic tips, lighters, Starbucks coffee cup stoppers and plastic foam, a lot of plastic foam!

It has been noted that after a storm, Sargeant Bay seems to be hit quite hard and more debris makes its way onto shore and among the many logs. Does that mean that garbage and possibly sewage is being dumped in the ocean nearby? Hard to know for sure but many concerned citizens that walk the park every day take the extra time and effort to collect as much as they can while they should just be enjoying the nature around them. We all know that some visitors to the park disrespect their surroundings and even with garbage bins close by, choose to throw their refuse on the ground and in the ocean, along with not picking up after their pets. This of course happens everywhere but at least there are these kind souls that make the extra effort to clean up what they can and let us all know what they find. You are very much appreciated and hopefully inspire others to follow in your footsteps.

As we enter into our second week in January, some have continued with their new year resolutions while others are just staying the course hoping for a better and healthier next few months. We try to stay positive and collectively make our world a better place. Staying informed and connected is key to helping us navigate through this very different way of living. Reach out to your neighbour, friend or family member. Call them, your voice might just make the difference to someone’s troubled day. Hearing your laugh and kind words might give them the boost they need. Knowing that you cared enough to pick up the phone and take a few moments just for them, to hear how they are doing, might make their day bearable and most importantly, make them smile. We are all in this together; knowing this and acting upon it is guaranteed to make things better.

Be safe, be gentle and always be kind.
