A veterinarian will check over a popular pig that lives alongside the Lochside Trail.

The SPCA, which ordered a vet check — or that the 18-year-old sow be put down — after a member of the public complained about its condition, now says it will pay for the checkup.

Saanich farm owner Frans Winkel said Tuesday he is waiting to hear when the vet will come to the farm.

He maintains that despite her age, the pig is healthy, other than a chronic skin condition that he treats with a special spray. There is no need to euthanize her, he said.

Generations of capital region residents know the Winkels’ farm and have stopped to visit their pigs while passing by on the trail. This past weekend was especially busy, he said.

Since the Times Colonist wrote about the pig, many readers have come forward volunteering to pay for vet checks and treatment if needed.

The sow, who is estimated to be about 400 pounds, is the only pig remaining on the farm, where the Winkels started raising pigs in 1969. The pig was born there and is a pet to Frans, who feeds her fresh produce daily.

The Winkels say they hope the pig will be allowed to live her life out on the farm. Pigs can live 15 to 20 years.
