RCMP funeral procession for slain Mountie starts at 1 p.m. in Abbotsford

The procession to escort the body of Const. Frederick "Rick" O'Brien will begin along Highway 1.

Commuters in the Fraser Valley are being advised of a funeral procession today, Sept. 26, for Const. Frederick "Rick" O'Brien, who was fatally shot in Coquitlam last week.

The RCMP procession to escort the body of the slain Mountie will begin along Highway 1 at 1 p.m. from Abbotsford Regional Hospital to an undisclosed funeral home.

The public can watch the procession from one of five overpasses along the highway:

  • McCallum Road
  • Clearbrook Road
  • Peardonville Road
  • Fraser Highway
  • Mt. Lehmann Road

In a news release, BC RCMP said no road closures are anticipated.

O'Brien was killed in the line of duty last Friday, Sept. 22, while executing a search warrant with two other Ridge Meadows officers.

Nicholas Bellemare, 25, who was also shot during the altercation in the Evergreen residential building, is charged with first murder and attempted murder with a firearm; a second officer was also wounded by a bullet.

Bellemare’s next appearance in court is on Oct. 3, 2023.

O’Brien is survived by his wife, Nicole Longacre O'Brien, and six children.
