Meet Gibsons council candidate Bob Morris

The following is a Q&A that was distributed to all Gibsons candidates.

Candidate name

Bob Morris

Occupation (s)

Broadcaster, broadcast consultant, college/university instructor, administrator, radio talk show host

Which position are you running for?

Councillor

If not incumbent, list related municipal committee / civic group experience.

Director Gibsons Harbour Authority/Former chair Gibsons Chamber of Commerce/Area planning council

Live in Gibsons? For how long?

21 years

What are your priorities if elected?

Sustainable growth and affordable housing including rental accommodation; water and infrastructure; community engagement; asset management; climate change; public safety; Ferries, transportation and roads; Transparent and responsive local government

Should Gibsons facilitate creation of more affordable housing? How?

Municipal Government has limited powers to build affordable housing but it can take measures to promote and support it. The introduction of empty home tax could also free up available properties. Increase communication and work with other levels of government.

What should council be doing to protect the Town’s water supply?

Protecting aquifer 560 should be a high priority. The recent aquifer mapping study recommends ongoing discussions with stakeholders and the installation of monitoring wells etc. I support all recommendations.

Should Gibsons prepare for climate change? If so how?

Yes.  Climate action should be a municipal priority. Active transportation should be promoted and facilities such as walking paths and bike lanes should be created.  Increasing density in appropriate areas will help lessen the need for vehicle travel.

How can council mitigate the many upward pressures on property taxes?

Council should carry out a complete review of expenses and current spending practices. Development proposals should include payments to cover the costs of improving and increasing infrastructure to support them.

How would you balance pushback on development with need for housing?

Pushback to development is generally seen when inappropriate projects are proposed.  I don't believe there is any disagreement with the need for housing or development in general.  Proposals should fit with the town's Official Plan, particularly in Lower Gibsons.

What do you wish we'd asked you?

Is the Town of Gibsons better off today than it was when the current council was elected four years ago?
