Sounds of cheering and honking could be heard in the late hours last Sunday night as several Sechelt Indian Band (SIB) youth soccer teams celebrated their weekend success.

The U7, U10 and U16 teams all picked up first place honours while the U13 team finished third at the Mount Currie tournament. The U7 and U10 teams both went undefeated at the tournament and all the SIB teams were full value for their wins, even coming from behind to win in the last minutes of their games.

The U7 squad was a small, pick-up team, but they played with a lot of heart and in the championship game beat Lil'wat 3-2.Sequoyah John tucked in two goals in the first half only to see Lil'wat tie it up in the second. But Sequoyah and his teammates would not be denied the first place trophy as he added his hat trick goal and the whole team did not give Lil'wat any space to score. There were big plays and a solid effort to keep the score in Sechelt's favour.

All of the players came home with an MVP trophy and first place medals along with a most valuable coach award for Jason Fodchuk.

Trevor Julius opened the scoring in the first half for Sechelt, but his team was still down 2-1 heading into the second half in the U10 championship final against Seabird. Minutes into the second half, Justin Fodchuk tied the score 2-2. Furious action continued at both ends of the field, with Seabird pouring on the pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game, but great defence by Everett August and Aiyannah August and the strong goaltending of Seth Joe kept Seabird off the scoreboard.

Sechelt kept up its offensive pace and was rewarded with two late goals by Trevor Julius for the 4-2 final.

All-star awards went to Everett and Aiyannah, tournament MVP honours went to Trevor, and another most valuable coaching award went to Fodchuk.

The next tournament is a home event as the Sechelt Nation hosts their open soccer tournament on July 12 and 13.
