Four membersfrom local jiu jitsu academy, Coast Martial Arts in Gibsons, were in Seattle recently attending aseries of seminars with a member of the legendary Gracie family.
Along with more than 100 students from across the U.S. and Canada, they were able to learn from Rener Gracie,the grandson of jiu jitsu founder Helio Gracie, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 1.
RenerGracie is the coachof Coast Martial Arts chief instructor Shawn Phillips who teaches theGracie jiu jitsusystem exactly as is it is taught at the main academy in Torrance, and the same as originally taught by Helio.
"It was an opportunity for a few of our students to experience the highest level of jiu jitsu, straight from the source," said Phillips. "We were lucky to have been asked to help with the kidsbully proof seminar as well, as this is such an important issue for our children."
Classes are available for all adults and kids at Coast Martial Arts located at 1050 Venture Way.
Last weekend five members of Sunshine Coast Jiu Jitsu successfully tested for their blue and purple belts in Brazilian jiu jitsu including Marcel Van Der Stelt, George Watson, Mike Doyle, Jason Wilson and Sean Hatanaka.
The test was at Fierce Studio in Victoria and was administered by black belt Keith Owen from Idaho. The team practices at the Davis Bay community hall. Any questions can be emailed to instructor Mike Doyle at [email protected].
Great finish to junior tour
The final stop for 2103 in British Columbia on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour ran in great weather on Saturday, Oct. 5, at University Golf Club in Vancouver where a wait-listed field of 74 junior golfers competed in the MJT Nationwide One Day Fall Series.
Myles Killackey of Gibsons fired at round of 89 to finish 16th in the juvenile boys division.
No other Sunshine Coast golfers took part in the event.
