The dapper winners of the 2016 Dempster Tournament: Mark Correa, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly and Wally Dempster.

The Dempster Family Foundation will host the ninth annual Golf Tournament on June 23 at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club in Roberts Creek.

The fundraising event “started with humble beginnings” in 2010, said Foundation spokesperson Glenn Dempster, with around 30 golfers, and has since grown to almost 280 golfers this year. “People now come from all over B.C., Canada and the U.S. to play in the event.”

Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Ryan Dempster and his family started the foundation several years ago, with the vision statement to be “dedicated to raising awareness of DiGeorge Syndrome/VCFS and reaching out to families of children with the disorder, and the charities that support them, to help them deal with difficult situations they face each day.”

“Thanks to the generosity of last year’s sponsors and participants, we were able to provide grants to three very deserving organizations,” Wally Dempster (Ryan’s father) said in a press release. These include: the Zajac Ranch for Children that provides a summer camp experience for children with medical issues (www.zajacranch.com); the Challenger Baseball Program, helping children with cognitive or physical disabilities to enjoy participation in baseball at a level structured to their abilities (www.challengerbaseball.ca); and the Sechelt Hospital Foundation (www.sechelthospitalfoundation.org).

The tournament starts at 8 a.m. with a second tee-off at 1 p.m. Following the tournament, there will be a dinner for participants, prizes and a live auction.

Ryan Dempster will participate in the day’s events.
