Gibsons lacrosse player Thane Huson was picked up by Langley Thunder in the British Columbia Junior A Lacrosse League’s 2017 Midget draft held in Nanaimo on Jan. 7.

Thane was drafted in the fourth round, 26th overall out of nearly 50 other draft picks. This is the first time a Sunshine Coast lacrosse player has been drafted by a Junior A lacrosse team in British Columbia.

“I feel really good,” Thane said. “I was really happy when it happened. I was really excited.”

Thane, 16, has played lacrosse for the Sunshine Coast, Burnaby Mountain Selects, Vancouver Junior Stealth and field lacrosse for the Vancouver Burrards.

“I love the intensity and the fast-paced nature of the sport,” Thane said. “I started playing because my older brother played. This is my seventh year.”

Thane’s family is very proud of all the hard work Thane has put in to get to where he is today.

“We’re very honoured that his name was entered into the draft,” Thane’s mom Christa Joe said. “We’re proud of him for how hard he’s worked to get where he wants to go. He knows what he wants to do and he’s working hard to get there.

“We were told that Thane is the first player from the Sunshine Coast to ever make the checklist to even be in the draft. We thought it was an honour that Thane was mentioned for the draft – it blew us away that he was actually a fourth-round draft pick.”

Thane attributed his success to his family as well as Doug Locker, the president and general manager of Vancouver Stealth.

“He kept in contact with me and he helped me get my name out there and play on teams and grow as a player,” Thane said.

The Elphinstone Secondary student said that he is working towards earning himself a college scholarship through lacrosse.
