Last week, School District No. 46 continued to expand their basketball programs at the elementary level, with a 12-team play day for the Grade 4/5 athletes, followed by two tournament days for the Grade 6/7s.
The early start developmental basketball presently going on in the district has clearly paid dividends if the showing of the Elphinstone, Chatelech and Pender Harbour secondary schools recent successes is any indication.
It was an all Madeira Park final vying for the 'C' flight trophy, while the 'B' flight trophy was battled between the two West Sechelt entered teams. This may have been the best game of the day, as the teams finished full time tied at 14, so it was decided by the one-minute shootout, where all players on both teams attempted baskets in a minute. West Sechelt won 8-7.
The consolation final in the 'A' flight was another good game with Halfmoon Bay defeating Cedar Grove 15-12.
Gibsons and Kinnikinnick squared off in the championship final, with the Gibsons girls knocking down two late baskets to win 13-8. Thanks again to Emily, Stephanie and other referees and scorekeepers for their assistance on the days. Thanks also to the staff, Ellen Thomas and the PE department for giving up their gym for two days.
The Grade 6/7 boys tourney held at Elphinstone and Gibsons Elementary School was again officiated well with the help of the high school athletes, notably Liam and Kai Moore, Sam Knight, Carlos Tingley, Rob Manuel, Quinn Gerard, Liam Selmes and Ian Marcelo. Thanks also to scorers Sienna, Isaac, Kaia, Chrystal and Georgy. Thanks also to Clint Fox and Lynn Moran for their help on the day.
In the 'C' flight consolation, Halfmoon Bay defeated West Sechelt 9-3, while Roberts Creek three-team took home the championship edging Madeira Park 15-14.
The 'B' flight was battled between the Gibsons one-team and the Cedar Grove two-team with Cedar Grove winning 14-9.
Davis Bay and Langdale surprised everyone making it into the 'A' flight consolation final, with Langdale getting bragging rights. But probably the best basketball of the day was in the 'A' final, where a strong Roberts Creek team battled right up until the final horn, losing a squeaker to the Cedar Grove one-team, 14-12.
