Sunshine Coast mountain biker Lucy Schick, 18, placed first in the U21 category at the Enduro World Series race last Saturday in Canazei, Italy.

This Enduro race, a hybrid between cross-country and downhill biking, required athletes to compete in five challenging stages over the course of five hours.

A heat wave, meanwhile, has been blasting across Europe, and temperatures in Canazei hovered above 30 degrees Celsius throughout the day.

Schick held first place after the second stage, but several small crashes set her back. She regained composure in the final stages after taping part of her bike back together, and crossed the finish line with a half second lead.

Next week, Schick races the next round of Enduro World Series in Les Orres, France. In August, she’ll compete in rounds six and seven of EWS in Whistler (Crankworx) and then Northern California.

Many individuals and businesses on the Coast have provided financial support to help Schick compete in this series.
