Chat and Elphi teams impress

The Eagles were sluggish in the first half, struggling to get their speedy offence on track. In the third quarter they came out flying. Head coach Dagin Brackett listed his starting five, Jonah Lussier, Jove Knauff, Andrew Palmer, Scotty Legault and Kyle Horsman, as the guys who ignited the flame. They went on a 14 -0 run in a few short minutes.

Top scorer for the Eagles was Jonah with eight points. Kyle was a defensive machine, pulling down 15 rebounds, and Andrew was a monster in the offensive end, completely dominating under the boards.

Next home game for Chat is Feb. 4 against Mulgrave, set for a 4:45 p.m. tip-off.

The Chat junior boys continued their winning ways with a 40-33 win over host Seycove Secondary on Monday night.After jumping out to an 18-11 halftime lead, Chat allowed the Seyhawks back into the game, but eventually did what they needed to bring their league play record to 4-1 and their season total to 13-7.

Zander Reid was the player of the game for his splendid play at both ends of the court, scoring exactly half the Eagles' points. Paul Desautels chipped in seven, and Matt Brown and Connor Weatherston had five points apiece.

The enthusiastic Grade 8 girls from Elphinstone Secondary School took on the challenge of competing against the best Grade 8 and Grade 9 teams in B.C. in a tournament at Royal Oak Middle School in Victoria last weekend.

Elphi lost a hard-fought game Friday night by 18 points to the Island champs from Royal Oak. Carlee Benner and Michelle Wells scored some nice baskets, while Sydney Lambert, Jaimee Webb and Cherilyn Anderson provided tenacious defence.The next game featured Steve Nash's alma mater St. Michael's University's Grade 9 team.

SMU jumped out to an 11-1 lead, but Elphi refused to give up, battling back and scoring the next eight points.

Emily Hoy, Maddy Weber and Rebecca Rhodes provided some nasty defence, turning the ball over to Caitlyn Kyle and Kailyn Sampson for timely baskets.SMU eventually pulled out a win but were impressed by the effort and skill of Elphi.

In the final game, Ephi faced off against tournament champs Monterey High. Cora Taylor had a break-out game, leading the team in scoring and rebounds. Sara Mitchell played a strong defensive game, while Beth Nanson showed off her soft shot. Elphi again lost a tough game but received praise from opposing coaches for their competitive spirit, athleticism and sportsmanship.
