In response to Jancis M. Andrews (“Where is the justice?” Coast Reporter letters, May 8).
Somebody help me out here: Winston Blackmore of the “polygamous cult of Bountiful” has been charged with impregnating (read raping) 10 underage girls (children), amidst other indecencies and criminal offences, and has not seen the inside of a courtroom yet?
Ms. Andrews also states the rumour that “the Liberal government is not charging Blackmore with all his crimes because of high court costs.” If it had been anyone else not associated with a religious group, there would be a huge outcry if not a lynching. How does something like this happen?
I now realize that the whole issue of Bountiful and the cross-border shopping of young girls has been out of the news lately. Maybe it’s time to look back into this story. Religious organizations seem to get away with anything they want, still. If there is no god, then why do we, the courts and government, treat these religious criminals with kid gloves (pun intended)?
