Well-earned tribute

Although not aware of it, I met the good doctor when I was three weeks old.

When my grandmother, Georgina Hudson, walked down the gang plank at the Roberts Creek wharf holding me well covered in shawls, Dr. Fred Inglis was on hand. Lifting the shawl to see my face, he said, “Don’t bother to dress it, Mrs. Hudson.” My grandmother, not amused, placed the shawl over me again and haughtily said, “We’ll see.”

So here I am, 86 years later, a complete Dr. Inglis “fan” promoting Stonehurst to be our first heritage house.

Within Stonehurst’s walls, three Dr. Inglises practised, for Dr. Frederick’s sons Alan and Hugh began their work here and Dr. Hugh took care of all of us hereabouts for many, many years. Presently, artifacts which graced Stonehurst are in our museum. All could be returned to make room for other items in need of display.

At the moment our town, because of greed, is divided and filled with anger and distrust. For me, it’s as if we have lost the essence of Gibsons with, so far, only our wonderful scenery remaining …

Perhaps working together to raise funds for the purchase of Stonehurst, keeping it as a heritage house, would do much to relieve the present ugly situation.
