Editor:
We are now in an election campaign that will not only be the longest in modern history but, thanks to the Conservatives’ Fair Election Act, it will be the most expensive we have ever had. I hope the people realize that for every dollar the parties and candidates spend, at least half comes out of our tax dollars.
Mr. Weston tells us he is listening to the people, but in the Aug. 7 Coast Reporter he said he will have meet-and-greets in public and people’s homes. I’m sorry but that is not good enough. There are a lot of big issues facing the country and our riding, and we deserve to have more than meet-and-greets.
There is the potential for LNG and oil sands bitumen tankers sailing off our coast. The Conservatives’ energy first fiscal policy has pushed us into recession while their Employment Minister handed out billions of tax dollars, saying it’s “like Christmas in July.” The supposed balanced budget was achieved by huge budget cuts and the Conservatives’ record with veterans and First Nations has been appalling.
The courts have struck down parts of the Conservatives’ law-and-order legislation, medical marijuana and right-to-life policies. In response, Weston has stuck his head in the sand and refused to deal with it. Whatever side of those issues we are on, we deserve to have our views heard.
We need to have open town hall meetings with Mr. Weston so we can ask questions and voice our concerns. We need to have him answer in public and be able to look him in the eye when he responds. Anything less than that is an insult to his constituents.
