MP John Weston recently grabbed the media spotlight by claiming he broke party ranks in the House of Commons being the only Conservative to vote in favour of an NDP private member’s bill on derelict vessels.
How absurd and deflective! Our MP’s voting record shows that he has supported every bill that the Harper government has put forth – omnibus budget bills, bills gutting environmental laws, veteran cuts, trade agreements, etc. He is also a fervent supporter of Bill C-51. He has no choice but vote the way Harper tells him to. Not once did our riding MP represent the feelings or opinions of the voters he represents.
The NDP bill was easy for Weston to “support” since it was doomed to fail because of the Harper majority. His vote meant nothing – except that Weston could say to his constituents, “See, I’m not a muzzled seal. I voted for the NDP bill.”
Mr. Weston is first and foremost a fervent supporter of the Harper agenda. To cast himself as otherwise is self-serving sleight of hand.
