Vandalism: or was it a bear?

Editor: I chuckled when I read your exposé on the Sechelt-area trees that have been vandalized (Coast Reporter, June 18).

We had a similar problem this spring at our home in West Vancouver, but in an area of our lot which is particularly difficult for people to get to. I re-staked the bent and broken trees using 5/8" rebar posts, and the next day, they were both bent right over again, steel posts and all. And beside the bent trees and mangled steel, a big pile of bear poop.

Perhaps the Sechelt parks department should consider looking for a bear that likes the fresh new shoots on the tops of your trees, rather than blaming human vandals.
