Gibsons is well divided on the issue of the most recent so-called George Hotel development attempt, a job well done by savvy marketing.
The town council and citizens have invested over nine years in cross-checking this developer from overly exploiting Gibsons by asking the pointed question “What’s in it for the town?” The answer has never been a satisfactory trade-off … until this recent council took control.
The developer’s offer is worse than ever with a dead-locked council, yet Mayor Wayne Rowe consistently makes the decision to support the George? This cannot be right.
Please do not trust the Gibsons Alliance of Business Society or The George supporters. Check the facts for yourself. They are available. Put them through the propaganda filter. Hold them up to the light. Google them. Whatever it takes to be certain you are not being misled.
Then speak the truth and speak it loudly. These are not times for the timid. The timid are being trounced; their advocates overwhelmed. The earnest are myth-informed; their ombudsman has sold out. The stewards are being manipulated; their interpreter is extinct. The vigilant are targeted; our leaders are now bullies.
Our community’s “mojo” has shifted dramatically due to some forced gentrification. Sure, some of it is a natural progression, but the brand that we are witnessing recently is mostly unnatural and reeks of an illegal takeover. This coup has no regard for the fabric of our community.
Let us unite in managing our growth spurts. Let us retain our rare charm. Let us build on the character of this little fishing village called Gibson’s Landing before the big fish have scooped it all up.
