Smoke, ashes and mudslinging

I will state that I am a home-owning, tax-paying resident of Gibsons to satisfy those who feel this is a prerequisite to speak.

In Brian K. Sadler versus “the opposition” (Letters, July 10), he writes a vivid, disjointed tirade. The segue from wildfire smoke to Metro Vancouver’s garbage incinerating to selfies leads into an opportunity to belittle “the opposition,” once again labelling them as liars and bullies of council and staff of Town Hall, business owners and the general public over the proposed George development.

Former councillor Gerry Tretick’s commentary (Letters, July 17) on due process at work gave me the impression that he does not respect the civic right of all citizens to voice their opinions. Members of the group he refers to are entitled to voice their opinions individually or collectively whether or not they agree in whole, in part or not at all with this controversial project. I feel disappointed and dismayed by the treatment of Gibsons’ OCP at the hands of those who were elected and hired to protect and honour it.

I am not part of Mr. Benson’s “clamouring group.” I am not anti-development or a naysayer, although I am labelled as such by some because I disagree with many aspects of the proposed George development.

The potential for compromising our town’s source of water, the sheer size and height of the project and misleading promises of economic gain for our community are my main causes of concern, and I have many others. Mr. Tretick may consider me “anti-progress.” Our definitions of progress would likely be somewhat different.

I have the right to question, agree or disagree as I choose regarding the above mentioned topics and I do so without public shaming, name calling or degrading labelling.

Julia Currie, Gibsons
