I recently spotted an adult female white-tailed deer swimming across the harbour from Madeira Park to the island.

The deer waited for a break in boat traffic and then jumped in the water from a rocky outcrop by the government dock. I watched her swim all the way to the island in about 25 minutes, dodging speeding boaters who never even slowed down.

It is alarming how fast most boats travel inside Pender Harbour, especially considering the rules state they should travel at five knots an hour max. These speeding boats zoom by marinas causing damage to moored boats and docks, as well as doing ecological damage to the shoreline where birds nest and seals rest.

Please slow down, boaters! Pender Harbour is a deer crossing zone.
