Sewage plant a noisy nuisance

The following letter was sent to District of Sechelt council and copied to Coast Reporter.

As previously communicated to council, the Sechelt sewage treatment plant machinery produces a subterranean rumble in many of our adjacent homes that is heard day and night at varying volumes. This low-frequency noise causes stress, hypertension and sleeplessness, and it is very much a health issue. This year we have had to suffer it for more than four months, and nothing helpful is being done.

Last year, when the noise was reported to the District of Sechelt, it was stopped for three to four months at a time. Now the District claims it doesn't know what causes the problem nor how to stop it. When the noise was stopped last year, the plant operated as usual, proving the rumble is not essential to the plant's operation. Yet, it is allowed to continue even though it contravenes the District's own noise bylaw.

On behalf of our neighbourhood, I am requesting council to help solve sewage treatment plant issues that negatively affect home-owners.
