Safety upgrades being identified

LETTERS

The following letter was sent by Minister Todd Stone to Gibsons Coun. Silas White, who pressed the ministry for improvements to the School Road, North Road and Gibsons Way intersection when he was a school trustee. This is an update on the progress to date.

Thank you for your letter, and attached correspondence, regarding the intersection of School Road, North Road and Gibsons Way in Gibsons.

Safety is the ministry’s highest priority, and I understand the importance of this issue to the Board of Education School District No. 46, as well as to local residents of the area.

I hope you will be pleased to know that local ministry staff is currently working with the Town of Gibsons to identify safety upgrades for this intersection. We anticipate finalizing a preliminary design for an intersection improvement project by February 2015. Please be assured that improving safety at this intersection is a priority for the ministry, and that once a final cost estimate has been established, we will actively pursue prioritizing the project for future funding opportunities.

In the meantime, as an interim safety measure, the ministry has installed additional signage approaching the intersection. Ministry staff will continue to monitor this location to see if any further short-term safety provisions are warranted. We have also spoken with the local RCMP and made them aware of your continued concern about this intersection and plan to continue to include them in our review.

Todd G. Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
